Lady Bugs 3 - Breakers 1

The "Lady Bugs" U-10 Girls Soccer Team remains Undefeated in the 2001 soccer season. They played a great game against The Breakers. This game was played on October 27, 2001,  on a windy Saturday morning, at Amy Blanc School, 9:30 am. It was Erin's birthday, we missed Erin and The Lady Bugs dedicated this game to her.

This was a tough game against a tough opponent, but the "Lady Bugs" team had a strong defense, a solid midfield and relentless strikers who slowly dominated the game from the kick off. A fast run by a Breakers right win forward ended up in a beautiful shot at goal which sailed to the top right corner in the second minute into the game, however, Wendy, the Lady Bugs goalie, reacted with self confidence and blocked the shot with her right hand. A series of nice crosses and passes by the Lady Bugs players occurred in the first 10 minutes into the game with few clear shots at goal. Sarah D, Taylour and Bethany, the Lady Bugs strikers continued to put pressure on the Breakers defense and followed up their shots at goal, creating some scoring opportunities.

Our defense was composed by Linette, Rebecca, Casey and Briana who did not give room to the Breakers players to maneuver into Wendy's penalty box. Casey played strong defense and anticipated the ball blocking the Breakers in the left side of the field, Casey positioned herself beautifully during the corner kicks. Rebecca showed determination in pursuing the ball, made nice moves and shut down the Breakers left wing. Linette was secure as sweeper, covering the middle of the defense and relentlessly containing the Breakers attack. Altough Linette had to cover tall opponents she did not give up easily. Briana did not give any changes to the Breakers left win, her sense of anticipation has improved tremendously, her strong shots and passes to midfield were the starting point in the Lady Bugs attack.

The long waited goal happened at the 20th minute of the first half. However, previous to the Lady Bugs first goal, Taylour, Corina, Kellie and Lindsay controlled the midfield. Nice footwork and ball control was observed in the Lady Bugs midfield. Taylour is used to maneuver successfully the ball between 3 or 4 defenders, opening the field for the Lady Bugs attack. Corina has developed a great understanding of her positioning at midfield and created several passes to both sides to open the game for the attack. Kellie trapped the ball and also ventured to block the Breakers defenders. Lindsay's speed created headaches to the Breakers defenders who got tired of chasing her. Lindsay also pushed our team forward with her speed. 

The "Lady Bugs" first 2 goals happened in the last 5 minutes of the first half. The first goal was a result of the Breakers' goalie soft kick to the center of her penalty box. The goalie cleared the ball which bounced in front of Bethany who without hesitation took a shot. The shot sailed above the goalie beating for the first time. The Lady Bugs midfield continue to weave some nice plays, as a result, Taylour retrieved the ball and passed it to Corina in the right side of the field. Corina positioned herself moving to the left and passed the ball to Bethany. Bethany took a shot with a first touch to the right side beating the goalie for the second time. The Breakers answered rapidly with a fast run on the right side, however, Wendy again did a great save.

For the second half the Lady Bugs team entered into the field more confident than ever, knowing that they were defeating a strong opponent. Briana, Linette and Casey were awesome in the defense. Lindsay tackled the ball facing two opponents. Wendy continue blocking the Breakers shots. Sarah D did a break away run on the right side which ended up in a shot to the right side of the goalie. Sarah P played only ten minutes because she was not fully recovered from a cold, but that was not a deterrent for her to be part of the action and helped at midfield. The Lady Bugs players continued to dominate the game, our players tackled the ball with aggressiveness, and took several shots at goal. At the 19th minute, a series of rebound occurred at midfield, a Breaker player got the ball and run forward on the right side of the field, she was successful in controlling the ball, and with a soft kick beat the Lady Bugs goalie, giving some hope to the Breakers supporters on equalizing the game.

But, the "Lady Bugs" know that the best defense is the attack, and they pursued moving forward with determination, the remainder of the game was complete in favor of the Lady Bugs. At the 24th minute, after a throw-in in favor of the Lady Bugs team, Taylour kicked the ball at goal, which resulted in a Breakers defender hand ball inside the penalty box. Bethany took the penalty kick placing the ball to the left side of the goalie. It was a well placed penalty kick which hit the inner part of the goal post before it hit the net, increasing the score to 3-1. This was Bethany's third personal goal in this game. Our players once again played an awesome game, showing respect to the officials, following the laws and honoring the game.
