PREDATORS 1 - HOT SHOTS 0

Predators Victorious in First League Game !!!

By Matt Rosemond

The Predators opened up their regular season schedule in beautiful sunny weather at Strong Park in Elk Grove against the Hot Shots. Both teams looked well prepared and anxious to start the season and there was a good crowd on hand to watch the action, but where were the referees? For the third straight game there was a delay involving the referees. Thanks to some parents (including Mr. Agustin Ramirez) who volunteered, the Predators were able to play this game with replacement referees.

The delay seemed to take the " wind out of the sails" for both teams, as the game started at a rather slow pace. Most of the action was in the middle of the field as both teams were feeling each other out. Midway through the first half, the pace to the game started to pick up. Katrina made a nice save on a shot and sent a great kick to the far side for Ericka, who sent it though to Kelsey on a breakaway shot that just missed the goal. Meanwhile, the Predator defense was looking tough. Kylie replaced Kelsey, who moved to the front and Yolanda, Mellisa looked good on the outside.

Kristina was all over the field in this game, intercepting 7 Hot Shots passes and saving one goal by deflecting a shot that was headed for the back of the net. The front line and midfield were starting to heat up late in the first half. Andrea sent a nice pass through to Kelsey on another breakaway and Sara took a nice shot. As the first half came to a close, the score was still 0-0.

The Hot Shots came out very aggressive in the second half, pounding several quick shots. Erica, who took over in goal had her hands full as she made several nice saves. As the game went on, the Predator midfielders - Ericka, Angel, and Sabi were starting to take control of the game. Again, Kelsey was moved to the front and Kylie did a great job defending the middle. The Predators were starting to wear the Hot Shots down, sparked by some gritty play by Sabi, Yolanda, and Ericka, who were not giving an inch even though they were out-sized by several of the Hot Shots attackers. It looks like all those hard practices are starting to pay off at the end of the games!

With about 10 minutes left in the game, Katrina sent the ball up to Ally on the wing, who beat a defender, dribbled, then crossed it to Kelsey, who faked, then beat the Hot Shots goalie for the winning GOAL !!!

Just like the Predators have been practicing that play! That goal would be all that the Predators would need, as they hung on to win 1-0. This was a real team effort.

Everyone contributed to this win. Great Job Predators!
